Python and the Magic of Deep Learning

Mr. Nasser AlOstath
a Technical Consultant with WSI Kuwait
a Computer Engineer at the Ministry of Information

A.I. is a growing field in the world. It's a field that is applied in almost every field know to man in modern age. The obsession if making computers think learn like humans became the number one Field of study in the world. In our lecture, we will Go through a gentle introduction to artificial intelligence and machine learning and their most famous algorithms to teach computers how to learn. We will also use python programming language to implement simple software mimicking an artificial brain using one of the algorithms. All that will be done using Google colabs environment.

Climbing the Ladder of Academia: Fall, Get Back Up and Keep on Moving

Dr. Mowafa Househ
a Digital Health Professor
Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar

When colleagues or students ask him about what it takes for someone to be a successful academic, for him, it was not about being smart or hard-working, it was about being resilient. Academia is a very tough field where students, colleagues and administrators are trained to be overly critical and harsh of others. Academics (current and future) that have vision, passion, and a strong sense of resilience will not only survive, but thrive in such an institution. Dr.Househ will share his personal journey in Academia and how resilience combined with a strong sense of passion and vision helped him overcome the odds and be recognized as one of the most successful academics in his field, especially, within the Arab world.

The Essence of Cyber Security

Dr. Reem AlShammari
is Information Security Team Leader
Kuwait Oil Company

Nowadays, we live in a digital era where everything around us had been digitalized. From an Organization aspect, its valuable data is stored, processed and transmitted through the digital mediums. Such high value brings high risk, and thus the need for Cyber Security presence arises to mitigate these risks. Cyber risks are not only impacting organizations but also but also have a high impact on our personal lives as everything from paying bills to performing personal banking activities are performed through various digital medium and devices (e.g., laptops, smart phones, tablets). The world is so engrossed in the technology that activities in cyberspace are inseparable from day to day operations in business, healthcare, education, government and even military. More over, and based on the growing sophistication and aggressiveness of state-sponsored cyber-attacks witnessed recently around the world, even a cyber war involving attacks on the critical infrastructure of nations had become very possible. For instance, A simple malware can do a lot more damage than a conventional or physical war, it can also paralyze the whole organization, country and even create health and safety issues. Thus, To protect against such risks, we need to understand fully and capture the essence of Cyber Security where it should be weaved into the fabric of digitization and into even day to day digital activities. This session shall walk you through various Cyber Security risks and basics of protecting against such risks. The session will also discuss the various opportunities available for the future professionals in the Cyber Security space.

How to Embark on Research in the Field of Internet of Things(IoT)

Dr. Mounib Khanafer
Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering
American University of Kuwait (AUK)

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a concept coined after recent important developments in various research areas, especially wireless sensor networks. IoT refers to a new paradigm of the Internet in which various objects (or things), that were not traditionally part of the conventional Internet, attain the ability of being effective parts of communications networks. These things can actively collect, analyze, and exchange data with other things or systems connected to the Internet. Furthermore, these things can take useful actions through activating actuators that are attached to them (or at least situated close by). As IoT systems become popular in various domains and applications today, we can see rich resources on these systems available in the literature. Such literature motivates the efforts to develop courses on IoT for students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. However, a major challenge occurs in approaching a course that is supposed to compile topics tackling various, and diverse, technologies in a unified material for university students. In this talk, we draw on the experiences gained from teaching the Introduction to the Internet of Things course for three consecutive semesters at the American University of Kuwait. We aim at sharing the lessons learnt out of this experience with the teaching and research community. A main target of this work is to develop helpful guidelines on how to introduce university students to the emerging technologies of IoT and how to conduct research in this evolving field.
